I never thought I'll be the one apart of history. but it has happened. This is the true magic of putting in the effort
On September 14, 2023, I was invited to the center for Brooklyn History's grand reopening celebration, which had a huge impact on developing and bringing true Brooklyn history into the space and having my story be a part of it. There is frequently stigma and anxiety associated with living in Brooklyn and the East New York neighborhood. I remember as a kid growing up, my parents had a lot of fear about things happening around us—the fear of violence—and just wanted us to be connected to the right group of people. The idea that young people are not going to make it far when they are from these neighborhoods like this
Most recently, I started to embrace my Brooklyn community. In a community that does not always see young people like me, especially those with disabilities, doing the work that I do, I started to slowly get opportunities to have a seat at the table and use my voice, which led me to make connections and network. I remember a time in my life when I felt invisible. Here, I am visible.
Now look at me being part of Brooklyn History. My story and picture are part of the Center for Brooklyn History gallery.
